Ethical fashion as a tool for the empowerment of refugees
We will first provide an outlook on the state of social entrepreneurship in Switzerland and Europe by Tomás Navarro Blakemore. Social enterprise combines entrepreneurial activity with a social purpose. Its main aim is to have a social impact, rather than maximise profit for owners or shareholders.
Then, SEP Jordan co-founder Roberta Ventura will present its work empowering refugees. SEP is a Jordanian social enterprise sourcing and producing high quality fashion and lifestyle accessories hand-embroidered by refugees in the Jerash and Azraq camps. Established in 2014, SEP is transforming the lives of over 500 Palestinian and Syrian refugee artisans living in Jordan, in partnership with the UNHCR. The SEP artists benefit from above-market remuneration and performance-related bonuses while producing fashion items of superior quality. The artists are at the core of SEP’s business model, providing creative input on all the company’s designs and products.
Roberta Ventura, co-founder of SEP Jordan, will discuss how fashion initiatives can be used to empower refugees by supporting their economic independence.
